Local Projects Among Magazine Finalists

Thirty-five diverse developments from around the nation have been selected as finalists for AFFORDABLE HOUSING FINANCE's fifth annual Readers' Choice Awards. Two SD County projects are among the finalists: Villa Nueva, San Ysidro, Casa Familiar and Steadfast Cos., in the Preservation category and Los Vecinos, Chula Vista, Wakeland Housing and Development, in the Green category. Both are also finalists in the Overall Project of the Year category. Click here to vote through August 31. You must be an AHF subscriber to vote. The winners will be showcased in the November/December issue and will be honored at a luncheon at the conclusion of AHF Live: The 2009 Affordable Housing Developers' Summit on October 28 at the Palmer House in Chicago.

Water Issues Roundtable September 3

SDHF's Affordable Housing Roundtable Series continues with Water - The New Oil: Upcoming Challenges and Ideas focusing on water issues relating to affordable housing. Join a panel of experts who will brief you on the critical regulatory changes in the works, and provide suggestions for realistic and WaterWise landscape and domestic water conservation. The session will include interaction with the panelists.

The Roundtable will be held Thursday, September 3 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the NTC Command Center. It includes a continental breakfast. Click here for information and registration.

Workshops Set for Solar Funding, Metering

The Track 2 Multifamily Affordable Solar Housing (MASH) application is now available and applications will be accepted until September 30 for retrofitting existing affordable multifamily homes. The process is competitive with a total of $412,000 available for solar projects that demonstrate direct tenant benefit. For more information, click here. There will be an application workshop on August 20 in San Francisco which is also available on-line. Register here.

The Center for Sustainable Energy and SDG&E are hosting a Virtual Net Metering workshop August 14 from 9 to 10 a.m. to go over the basics of the new affordable housing solar rate schedule. Learn about a new utility tariff designed for multifamily affordable housing with solar PV. This new tariff will allow kWh credits from one solar system to be distributed to meters throughout a building, and in some cases an entire complex.  Register here.

Comment Deadline Extended for Parks Program

The California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) has extended the public comment period on the DRAFT Program Guidelines for the Prop 1C Housing Related Parks Program. The Program is designed to encourage cities and counties to develop new residential housing by rewarding those jurisdictions that approve housing affordable to lower-income households and are in compliance with State housing element law.
The comment period is extended through August 8.  For more information, click here.

Real Estate Summit August 18

The San Diego Association of Realtors is sponsoring a Regional Real Estate Summit Tuesday, August 18 from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel, Mission Valley.  Speakers will provide a regional real estate outlook.  They are Lawrence Yun, the Chief Economist from the National Assocation of REALTORS (NAR); Dick Gaylord, 2009 NAR Immediate Past President; James Liptak, 2009 CAR President; and Erik Weichelt, 2009 SDAR President.  For more information, click here.

Redevelopment 'Taking' Impact

We've been asked to assemble a list of problems our members are likely to face as a result of the massive redevelopment "take" enacted with the recent state budget deal (see the August issue of Housing and Community Development News). We are especially interested if projects with Prop. 1C awards are in jeopardy of losing anticipated RDA funding. Please send examples to doris@housingsandiego.org.
