Workshop Submissions Due July 27

If you have an idea for a 2009 SDHF Affordable Housing and Community Development Annual Conference workshop, now is the time to put that idea to paper.  Six tracks of programming, 18 workshops, will be featured at the October 15 conference at San Diego's Marina Village.

Think about what you've learned or the experiences you've had that others might benefit from.  Or, consider what you'd like to know more about and submit a proposal for a panel of speakers on that topic -- and you can be the moderator so you'll be sure to get those questions answered! The conference theme is "Navigating for the New Frontier." Program proposals are due no later than July 27. The typable submittal form is here

It isn't too late to join the Conference Planning Committee. Contact Kelley at kelley@housingsandiego.org to let her know you are interested. The next meeting is July 30.

July 17 Deadline for NSP2 Applications

Nipping at the heels of the July 17 deadline for jurisdictions to apply for cities and nonprofits to apply for nearly $2 billion in  Neighborhood Stabilization Program 2 funds from HUD, Policy Link has developed a toolkit for Reclaiming Foreclosed Properties for Community Benefit.  The toolkit includes case studies and suggests ways foreclosed properties can be used to increase the supply of affordable homes in a neighborhood. The toolkit provides a framework for developing a comprehensive foreclosure recovery plan and showcases the most innovative and promising strategies for the acquisition, maintenance, management, and transfer of these properties to low-income renters and homeowners, or for other beneficial neighborhood use.  Click here to view it.

Water Retrofitting Meeting Wednesday

SD City Council Member Marti Emerald will reconvene her subcommittee on water submetering Wednesday at 10 a.m.  The subcommittee is developing amendments to the Plumbing Building Code, expected to be proposed this fall, that would require water submetering in all new multifamily construction.  Committee members are encouraging the Council Member not to have the provisions apply to apartment rehabs or renovations given the potential difficulty and expense of re-plumbing and placing meters.  If you want to be involved in discussing the water issue and its impact on affordable housing or to participate in the Council Member's subcommittee, contact Doris Payne-Camp at 619-239-6693.  The Federation is planning a Roundtable on water issues on September 3.

Volunteer Needed for Smoke-Free Apartments

There is a meeting of the No Smoking in Apartments Task Force on Wednesday, July 15 at 2 p.m. The purpose of this new group is to develop a city-wide smoke-free policy for apartment communities. SDHF is interested in participating in this Task Force to represent the interests of affordable housing owners, managers and residents but we need someone to volunteer to be our representative. The meeting is being convened by Nathan Batchelder, Committee Consultant to the San Diego City Council Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee. Please contact Doris Payne-Camp at doris@housingsandiego.org if you are interested in volunteering.
