Registration Open for Awards Event

Registration is open for the Annual Affordable Housing & Community Development Awards Event Thursday, June 11 at the Handlery Hotel's Crystal Ballroom in Mission Valley.  The event is scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and includes a reception with heavy hors d'ouvres and the awards program.  Registration is $50 for members who register before June 4.  Silent Auction items will be onlne on June 1.  Donations are still being accepted.

Exchange Available for 2007-08 Credits

Projects that currently have a 2007 or 2008 reservation of 9% low income housing tax credits, with no state tax credits, that have been unable to secure an equity investor may now apply to the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee (TCAC) for equity awards.  The exchange program was authorized in the federal economic stimulus legislation earlier this year.

Applicants may receive an award equal to the stated equity in their original application up to $.85  for every currently reserved federal tax credit dollar. This application is only for 2007 and 2008 9% reservation holders that do not have state tax credits in the deal. Uncertainty remains about the availability of funds to replace state tax credits.

Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. on May 20 to be considered for the May 27 TCAC meeting. Applications submitted after that time will be considered at the subsequent Committee meeting. For more information and the application, click here.

Funding Update Roundtable June 4

The next Affordable Housing Roundtable is Thursday, June 4 at NTC Command Center.  The topc is "Show Me the Money:  Up to Date Information on Funding Affordable Homes".  Plan to hear the latest on tax credits, new state Prop 1C program allocations, funding for the state Multifamily Housing Program, and other glimmers of hope for creative financing for below market-rate developments. Registration and a continental breakfast begin at 7:30 with the seminar scheduled from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. It is sponsored by the Corporation for Supportive Housing. Registration for members is $14.

No Smoking Policies Meeting Topic

SDHF is collaborating with the SD Tobacco Free Communities Coalition and the San Diego County Apartment Association in a meeting to discuss no smoking policies in affordable home communities.  The meeting is intended to identify barriers to developing and implementing policies in communities that haven't previously prohibited smoking but are seeking to do so in the future.  The meeting is free and will be held Thursday, May 28 at SDCAA, 8788 Balboa Ave., Suite B, San Diego 92123.  It begins with a continental breakfast at 8:30 and the program runs from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.  RSVP to Apentico@sdcaa.com.

Housing Discrimination Study Underway

Concerns and recommendations related to housing discrimination in San Diego County will be discussed at four workshops and through a survey for the San Diego Regional Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice. Findings will be used to identify areas of need - and corresponding resources - to better enforce fair housing laws in jurisdictions throughout the county.

The first workshop is scheduled Thursday, May 28 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan Community Center, East Room, 195 East Douglas Avenue, El Cajon 92020.  A survey is also available here in English and Spanish. For more information, contact Nancy Graham at 619-233-1454 or nancy.graham@aecom.com

What Should Be Done with Empty Car Lots?

American automaker Chrysler announced this week that it would close nearly 800 dealerships across the country, and GM just announced it will cut off 1,100 dealers.  Their closure will also leave cities with huge empty plots of land.  What do you think cities should do with these newly empty car dealerships. Should they be converted into parks? Replaced with housing? Preserved as historic sites?

Planetizen, the urban planning electronic newsletter, is interested in your ideas. Participate in the brainstorm by submitting or voting here.
