Finding Affordable Housing in San Diego County
There is a wide variety of affordable housing opportunities in the County ranging from emergency shelters to programs that provide down payment assistance for the purchase of a home. Unfortunately, the demand for affordable housing far exceeds the supply of affordable housing. As a result finding affordable housing requires patience and persistence.
The first step is to download the following document:
Housing Resources Directory 2010 - 2013. (click here)
This document includes listings of affordable housing projects, shelters and service providers. It is maintained by the San Diego County Housing & Community Development. (Click on Underlined Text to go to referenced document). These sites also have information about the Section 8 Programs in the County.
NOTE: There is no citywide waiting list for apartments that are privately-owned. Each apartment complex has its own waiting list. To maximize your chances, you should apply to each complex.
2-1-1 San Diego has an online database of affordable housing complexes that you can search.
The San Diego Housing Commission has list of projects that have recently opened or are under construction that may have shorter waiting lists.
