Planning Commission to Reopen Public Hearing on Downtown Plan
The City of San Diego's Planning Commission has carried forward to January 12, 2006 consideration of the Downtown Community Plan Update. They will reopen public testimony at the hearing. The Commissioners have raised concerns about the adequacy of the EIR and affordable housing, among other issues. They are concerned that while the EIR identifies the impacts, that the mitigation of those impacts are not fully addressed, especially regarding transportation issues. Concerns have also been raised about the ability to meet the affordable housing goals.
BIA Expands "Welfare Housing" Campaign
The San Diego Building Industry Association expanded their anti-inclusionary housing campaign this week with a mailer sent to certain registered voters accusing three Oceanside City Council members of forcing "Welfare Housing" on new housing developments. Housing advocates were outraged by this naked attempt to cast inclusionary housing in terms that play on the racist and exclusionary fears of the middle class. They continue to claim that the cost of the inclusionary housing requirement makes the price of a house higher even though it is the economic principle of supply and demand that sets the price of a home, regardless of what it cost to build it. The Board of Directors of the San Diego Housing Federation condemns these tactics and will undertake a campaign to explain the benefits of inclusionary zoning to the general public after the first of the year.
