County Adopts New Park Fees

On Wednesday, the County Board of Supervisors approved new park fees on a 4-1 vote, with Dianne Jacob opposed. Jacob expressed a concern that there was no money set aside for ongoing maintenance of new parks once they are built.

Currently, the fees range from $400 per home in the far eastern portion of the county to $1,000 per home in the unincorporated area of San Dieguito. The new fees, which take effect April 20, will range from $2,684 per dwelling up to $6,974.

President's FY 2008 HUD Budget Disappoints

This week the Bush Administration released its FY 2008 budget proposal, reducing by 8 percent funding for U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) programs. According to the National Housing Conference (NHC), the Administration is touting a $1.6 billion increase, with a total budget of $35.2 billion, in HUD discretionary funding within the proposal. However, this total is based on a comparison to the FY 2007 HUD budget request of $33.6 billion and not the $38.3 billion that would be provided by the pending U.S. House of Representatives-approved FY 2007 joint funding resolution, or H.J. Res. 20.

Major Cuts:
  CDBG                                   -20%
  Public Housing Capital Fund      -15%
  HOPE VI                            Eliminated
  811 Program                          -47%
  202 Program                          -22%

Additional detailed information about the Administration's budget proposal can be found by going to a special edition of NHC's Washington Wire online newsletter.
