2007 Affordable Housing Symposium in SD

Attendees can choose among four, in-depth case study presentations designed to provide participants with a thorough understanding of key elements of the development process. Two High Rise Projects Move Forward

CCDC has approved a 229-unit,23-story affordable high rise development called Ten Fifty B in downtown San Diego. The developer is Affirmed Housing Group. Located on the north side of B Street between 10th and 11th avenues, 226 studios and one to three-bedroom units will be built for to low- and very-low income renters. The Redevelopment Agency will provide $33,975,000 to the project.  Ownership of the land will revert to CCDC once contruction is completed.

The CCDC Board also recommended that the City Council approve improvements to the Bishop Maher Center transitional housing facility in East Village. Father Joe's Villages will build a 12-story, 142-foot-tall building at Imperial Avenue and 15th, 16th and Commercial streets. The project will add 64 new permanent residential units and other residential services. Read the full staff reports for these projects.

No Change to Oceanside In-Lieu Fee

The Oceanside City Council put off changes to the inclusionary housing in-lieu fee this week and requested that the City Manager bring more alternatives for creating affordable housing.  Two Council members and building industry representatives argued that the fee, frozen at the same amount since 2002, was a tax on new homes.  Speaking on behalf of SDHF, Doris Payne-Camp said that if the city was going to continue to offer an in-lieu fee option as part of its inclusionary housing policy, the rate should be sufficient to develop the affordable units.  City Manager Peter Weiss said one option would be to offer developers increased density for their inclusionary units instead of providing an in-lieu fee option.
