Senate Banking Committee Acts On GSE Reform
No Affordable Housing Fund

The Senate Banking Committee met yesterday to consider reforms of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  The Housing of Representatives has included a requirement in their version that these two organizations establish an "Affordable Housing Fund" with 5% of their profits (see July 2005 Housing & Community Development News for details). The Senate Banking Committee passed out a version of the bill that does not include this provision. The vote was 11-9 along straight party lines. Senators from both parties spoke in favor of the Fund and there is some hope that it can be amended on the Senate floor or in conference committee. For more information see: http://www.nhtf.org.
