BofA Names San Diego Housing Federation and Junior Achievement of San Diego County
its San Diego 2025 Neighborhood Builders
Program Provides $400k in Grants & Leadership Training to Expand Job Readiness Programs
San Diego, Calif. – Bank of America has named San Diego Housing Federation and Junior Achievement of San Diego County as its 2025 Neighborhood Builders® for their efforts in creating and building job readiness and career pathways for San Diegans.
Bank of America’s signature Neighborhood Builders program continues to be one of the nation’s largest philanthropic investments into nonprofit leadership development, while providing unique multiyear flexible funding annually to high-impact nonprofits in communities nationwide. As Neighborhood Builders, each San Diego nonprofit will be awarded a $200,000 grant over two years, leadership training for the organization’s executive director and an emerging leader, and the opportunity to connect with nonprofits in a peer network.
“Our local nonprofits are crucial to addressing challenges in San Diego," said Mark Kremers, president, Bank of America San Diego. “Through flexible funding and comprehensive leadership training, the Neighborhood Builders program helps nonprofits address critical needs and promote economic opportunity for the individuals and families in our communities.”
San Diego Housing Federation (SDHF) provides advocacy, professional resources and workforce development programs that strengthen the affordable housing sector. The organization will use its funding to expand its Affordable Housing Management Academy, a 16-week certification program offered in partnership with MiraCosta College that equips participants, many of whom have firsthand experience living in affordable housing, with the skills needed to secure employment as affordable housing property managers. The Academy addresses San Diego’s urgent need for these trained property managers, with 418 annual job openings exceeding the current workforce supply.
“This Neighborhood Builders grant from Bank of America allows us to scale up a program that contributes to the sustainability of affordable housing communities,” said Stephen Russell, President and CEO of San Diego Housing Federation. “The Affordable Housing Management Academy addresses the urgent need for qualified management staff by training individuals from the very communities served by affordable housing—setting these communities and their residents up for long-term success.”
Celebrating its 75th anniversary, Junior Achievement of San Diego County (JA San Diego) empowers young people to achieve economic success through relevant experiential learning experiences and connections to social capital. JA San Diego will use its Neighborhood Builder funds to expand their Youth Workforce Initiative, which directly connects 11th and 12th graders to San Diego’s business community through mentorship and paid work experiences. Launched in 2022, more than 400 students have completed this program, and currently 72 students are participating.
“This Neighborhood Builders funding ensures that our team and organization have the capacity to better empower our students to achieve economic mobility,” said Sidd Vivek, President and CEO JA San Diego. “JA alumni demonstrate foundational knowledge of the local economy, personal finances, and career pathways — setting them on a path for future success.”
Bank of America has awarded more than $6 million to 34 nonprofits across San Diego County through its Neighborhood Builders program since 2004. Nationwide, the Neighborhood Builders program has trained more than 4,000 leaders at nearly 2,000 nonprofits.
