Fundamentals of Affordable Housing Finance 2025 Recap

On Thursday, August 28th, 2025, the San Diego Housing Federation and the California Housing Partnership hosted this year’s Fundamentals of Affordable Housing Finance training at the San Diego Central Library. Sponsored by St. Paul’s Senior Services and Icon National, the event brought together affordable housing professionals, developers, and advocates for a full day of in-depth learning, networking, and hands-on experience. Continuing the tradition established by last year’s successful session, this year’s training emphasized both the foundational concepts and the practical tools necessary to navigate the complex world of affordable housing finance.
Led by a team of experienced financial consultants from the California Housing Partnership, the training offered participants a comprehensive agenda covering key areas such as project feasibility analysis, funding strategies, and state and local resources. A major focus of the day was the intricacies of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and tax-exempt bonds, where attendees learned how to calculate tax credits and equity, understand regulatory requirements, and navigate application processes and allocation methods. By combining expert-led lectures with interactive exercises, the event provided participants with hands-on experience that reinforced their understanding of these critical financing mechanisms.
In addition to the technical training, the event provided ample opportunities for networking and collaboration. Lunch was offered on-site, allowing attendees to connect with peers, trainers, and sponsors, share insights from their own projects, and discuss emerging trends in affordable housing development. This year’s event also highlighted the important role of sponsors in supporting education and professional development within the sector, with St. Paul’s Senior Services and Icon National helping to ensure the day was both informative and accessible.
By building on the foundation of last year’s event, this year’s Fundamentals of Affordable Housing Finance equipped participants with the knowledge, skills, and practical tools necessary to successfully plan and finance affordable housing projects. It reinforced SDHF and California Housing Partnership’s shared mission of supporting the creation and preservation of affordable housing across California, empowering attendees to take what they learned back to their own communities and projects.
