As one of the San Diego Housing Federation’s signature annual traditions, the Ruby Awards brings together hundreds of housing and community leaders from across the region and state to applaud excellence in more than a dozen categories. It is a night designed to celebrate the dedication of our industry and to be inspired by the collective achievements of our partners.
The Ruby Awards recognizes excellence in affordable housing and community development, highlighting the transformative accomplishments of the people, agencies, and developments working to ensure all San Diegans—regardless of income—have a safe, stable place they can afford to call home.

2026 Ruby Award Categories

An individual residing in affordable housing in our region who has played an important role in promoting the creation of more affordable housing and/or enhancing how affordable housing improves the lives of residents and local communities.

An individual employee, volunteer, team, or program that is going beyond the call of duty to make a difference in the lives of residents.

Previously Exeptional Development Partner
An industry partner who provided unique or outstanding support on a complex affordable housing development completed between January 1, 2025 and December 31 2025.
Nominees in this category include architect, attorney, consultant, engineer, genreal contractor, lender, or design.

Previously Innovative Government Agency
Governmental agency or elected official that took unusual risk or initiative to support affordable housing and/or community development initiatives in the past year. Any local, regional, state, or federal governmental agency or elected official is eligible (regardless of where they are based) if their work substantially benefited affordable housing in the San Diego County region.

An outstanding supportive housing project or organization in San Diego that has a focus on supportive services to enable people to end their homelessness.

Recognizes an individual whose integrity shines through in their leadership, activism, or community work in affordable housing. Honors the late Rich Juarez, a co-founder of the Housing Federation, and a lifelong community leader in affordable housing.

Recognizes excellence in affordable housing developments that were acquisition or rehabilitation projects completed in San Diego County between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025.

There will be two awards for this category, Under 90 units and over 90 units.

The Voice of Lived Experience Award recognizes an individual with a lived experience of homelessness who has made a significant impact through their advocacy work, community engagement, and commitment to changing the narrative.
These are the individuals who shine a light on the true realities faced by our most vulnerable neighbors.

Honoring exceptional leadership and dedication to shaping emerging leaders of our industry through the Affordable Housing Management Academy. This award celebrates mentors who empower their mentees to lead with purpose, foster individual growth, and inspire excellence to building stronger, more equitable communities.
Eligible nominees must have participated as a mentor for SDHF’s Affordable Housing Management Academy in 2025.

Dress Code: cocktail, semi formal, or formal attire encouraged.
